7/14/2014

The Gwinnett Medical Center Cancer Institute is ramping up its offerings and quality of service in cancer care for patients in northeast metro Atlanta. First, it has been deemed a Lung Cancer Screening Center of Excellence by the Lung Cancer Alliance. Thoracic Oncology Nurse Navigator Nancy McCormick, RN, OCN was instrumental in working with the Thoracic Oncology Steering Committee to position the program for this accolade.

“Nancy and all the staff at the Gwinnett Medical Center Cancer Institute should be very proud to have achieved this quality distinction,” said Alice Kerber, MN, APRN, ACNS-BC, AOCN, APNG, Georgia CORE’s Oncology Nurse Specialist.

Additionally, the Cancer Institute recently launched Cancer Transitions, a program of the Cancer Support Community and LIVESTRONG at the new Cancer Support Center in Lawrenceville. Led by Oncology Social Worker Deidre Robinson, MSW, the free class is available to adult survivors in the community to help make the transition from active treatment to post-treatment care.

Finally, the Cancer Institute expanded oncology genetics services available in the region. Risk Assessment and Genetic Counseling services are now provided at the Cancer Support Center in Lawrenceville and the Center for Cancer Care in Snellville by Cindy Snyder DNP, APNG, FNP-C, CBCN, Nurse Practitioner, Advanced Practice Nurse in Genetics. Dr. Snyder is credentialed through the GNCC with specialized education in cancer genetics and hereditary cancer predisposition syndromes. Christopher Hagenstad, MD serves as Medical Director and Collaborating Physician. The services provided include pretest and posttest counseling with recommendations based on NCCN guidelines.
