Marquita Bass: What Motivates Me To Be A Lifetime Advocate

By Marquita Bass, Aug 20, 2021

In 2012, Triple-Negative Breast Cancer (TNBC) showed up in my life like a meteor out of nowhere. The foundation of my life was shattered. My experience was exacerbated after my aunt died from metastatic TNBC less than three weeks after my bilateral mastectomy. However, I have emerged as a victor nine years after my diagnosis. My experience has inspired me to become a lifetime breast cancer advocate because I want to encourage women, especially younger ladies, to take charge of their breast health. Some women may be able to reduce their breast cancer risk through education, diet, exercise, appropriate breast screenings, and genetic testing. Early detection may have saved my life! Furthermore, I am motivated to be a lifetime advocate because I want to empower cancer patients to believe, “You are your number one advocate for your health as you are in the throes of a diagnosis.” Finally, I will continue to plead the cause, specifically for TNBC patients, because it is the only breast cancer that doesn’t have a targeted treatment for early-stage disease. I want to use my voice, dedication, and influence to appeal to researchers to focus their efforts on finding different treatment protocols for TNBC subtypes.
