Northeast Georgia Cancer Care wins ASCO national clinical trial participation award
8/23/2013
More than 30 cancer clinical trials are currently being conducted in Athens, thanks to Northeast Georgia Cancer Care, one of only seven community oncology practices in the U.S. to be awarded the 2013 clinical trials participation award by the Conquer Cancer Foundation of the American Society of Clinical Oncology. NEGCC is only the second practice in Georgia to receive this
award. Central Georgia Hematology & Oncology Associates in Macon received the award in 2003.
“For people with cancer, longer life expectancy and better quality of life are among the benefits of clinical trials,” said NEGCC’s Petros G. Nikolinakos, MD. “At NEGCC, we often conduct trials unique to Georgia, or sometimes even to the U.S., so these cutting-edge treatments present an opportunity for patients to benefit from therapies not offered anywhere else.”
“The challenge,” Dr. Nikolinakos added, “is making patients and other physicians aware of the availability of trials, not just in Athens but throughout the state of Georgia. Thankfully GeorgiaCancerInfo.org provides a forum for the research community to share what’s available in the way of clinical trials to not only patients and their families, but also surgeons and other healthcare professionals that can refer patients."
Congratulations to Dr. Nikolinakos and his staff for this well-deserved award.
