New ‘Cancer Plan’ released for State of Georgia
8/28/2025
A vast collaboration of health care providers, organizations and individuals has developed a new 5-year strategic plan to fight cancer in Georgia.
The Georgia Comprehensive Cancer Control Plan represents an updated roadmap to prevent cancer, strengthen diagnosis and treatment and improve the quality of life for survivors. Shaped around five core priorities, the plan also aims to reduce disparities in how the state’s second-leading killer affects Georgians.
Action is an overriding emphasis: An entire section specifies ways stakeholders can get involved to improve prevention, early detection, care and policy. For physicians, clinicians and other healthcare professionals, two dozen suggested actions are offered.
“This ambitious five-year roadmap envisions what we can achieve together, united in purpose and determination,” writes Georgia Department of Public Health Commissioner Kathleen Toomey, M.D., M.P.H. in her opening letter. “The plan targets the cancers most affecting Georgians — breast, cervical, colorectal, lung, and prostate cancers — while steadfastly supporting the survivors who continue to inspire us.”
MAG members and their teams are encouraged to spend a few minutes perusing the plan, which is the product of the Georgia Cancer Control Consortium, a collaboration of DPH, the nonprofit Georgia CORE (which works to strengthen the fight against cancer in Georgia), the Georgia Regional Cancer Coalitions and 80 other organizations.
