Georgia CORE, It's The Journey and A Cure In Our Lifetime award $100,000 for breast cancer research

Just in time for Breast Cancer Awareness month, Georgia CORE, in partnership with It’s The Journey and A Cure In Our Lifetime Atlanta has awarded the 2019 Breast Cancer Research Partnership Award. Through an equal contribution from each partner, a $100,000 grant was awarded to Dr. Veena Rao, Morehouse School of Medicine for Triple Negative Breast Cancer Research.
“This is the work we love – assessing with our partners the most promising research to fund and then awarding a well-deserved pioneer in the field, right here in Georgia,” said Nancy Paris, president and CEO of Georgia CORE. “The fact that the awardee happens to be a woman of color is icing on the cake, and furthers Georgia CORE’s work in inclusion and equity.”
Georgia CORE managed a uniform process for the scientific review of the applications. The reviewers were Dr. Cletus Arciero, Winship Cancer Institute; Dr. Petros Nikolinakos, University Cancer and Blood Center; Dr. Frederick Schnell, Community Oncology Alliance; Dr. Jayanthi Srinivasiah, Georgia Cancer Specialists; and Dr. Howard Zaren, St. Joseph’s/Candler.
The funds allocated by Georgia CORE are from the state’s Georgia Cancer Research Fund, to which Georgia taxpayers elect to contribute on their state income tax forms. Collectively, Georgia CORE, It’s The Journey and A Cure In Our Lifetime Atlanta have awarded more than $25 million for breast cancer care and research in Georgia.
