Faith Got Me Through

By Susan Wolff, Aug 12, 2014

What was the impact of my breast cancer journey when diagnosed on September 17, 2011? I didn't wonder why me. Instead, I decided to do whatever was asked of me: first, it was a port-a-cath placed surgically in my chest, then a lumpectomy followed by four months of chemotherapy, a mastectomy and 31 days of radiation.

What got me through and I hope may get you through your journey was 2 Corinthians 1: 3-4 NIV: "Praise be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God." He walked with me through all of my treatments and I drew much strength because of it.

I felt I wanted to give back after my cancer journey and now volunteer at Saint Joseph's Hospital in Atlanta, Ga. I visit chemo patients receiving treatment and serve them tea and cookies. I really enjoy meeting patients and listening to their stories, trying to inspire them and provide hope that they, too, can beat cancer.

A great book I found to be very hopeful and inspiring was "An Uninvited Guest" by Jeana Floyd. The book is about one woman's journey from cancer to hope. She is now a breast cancer survivor for over 20 years and a pastor's wife.

Wishing you many blessings in the days ahead!
