Your tax filing can help fight cancer

When you prepare your next Georgia income tax return – please consider adding a few dollars to Line 34 to support the Georgia Cancer Research Fund.

Those funds go straight to researchers who are hard at work in Georgia labs finding new ways to fight cancer. They’re developing new treatments and new tools for diagnosis – and they’re grateful for Georgians who choose to support them.

It’s easy to do: Just enter any amount (over $1) on Line 34 of Georgia’s Income Tax Form 500. The state’s Department of Revenue will factor this amount into your tax refund or liability – so you don’t have to write a separate check or take any other action.

The FY27 and 5th annual Collaborative Cancer Research Seed Grant of $100,000 has been awarded to a team from the Mercer and Morehouse Schools of Medicine. The winning project brings Ilana Chefetz Menaker, PhD, a scientist at Mercer as PI together with co-PIs Regina Leonis, MD and Roland Matthews, MD, both gynecologic oncologists at Morehouse. Their proposed research project, “Characterization of CSC population and response to ALDH inhibitors in Uterine Serous Cancer” will help identify new treatments for USC, a particularly aggressive type of endometrial cancer that disproportionally affects minority women. Endometrial cancer has become one of the leading causes of death from gynecologic cancers in the U.S., creating an urgent need for new treatment options.

The FY26 seed grant was awarded to Ali Arbab, MD, PhD of the Georgia Cancer Center at the Medical College of Georgia, Augusta University and Mujibur Khan, PhD of Georgia Southern University. The two will be awarded $100,000 to study multi-drug nanocapsules for breast cancer treatment.
