Survivor needs assessment underway in Georgia

10/27/2014

In its ongoing mission to improve the quality of life of cancer survivors, Georgia CORE is conducting a survey of survivors throughout the state of Georgia. The purpose of the survey is to assess the needs across all aspects of survivors’ lives in order to better inform hospitals, organizations, agencies and other interested groups on how to care for this growing group of people.

So far, Georgia CORE has received more than 700 surveys from survivors in Georgia. “We are so impressed by the response from Georgia’s cancer survivors; it’s a really great return for an online survey,” said Logan J. Kirsch, MPH, CHES, Community Relations and Development Specialist for Georgia CORE. “But we’d like to hear from hundreds more in the remaining two weeks that the survey is open!”

The survey consists of multiple choice and short answer questions and is estimated to take no longer than 30 minutes. It asks questions about: (1) treatment experience and overall health status; (2) availability and access to support services; and (3) whether these services are meeting the respondent’s unique needs. Georgia CORE will summarize the information provided by the responses to help cancer centers and professionals in Georgia create more effective survivorship programs.

Participating survivors’ names and treatment institutions will be recorded so that Commission on Cancer hospitals can receive quality of life accrual credit for their survivors’ participation. All responses to the survey will be kept confidential and participation is voluntary. Individual information will not be used in reports or documents.

To be eligible to take the survey, individuals must: 1) Be a cancer survivor (According to the National Cancer Institute, cancer survivorship starts from the point of diagnosis and extends to the end of one’s life.) 2) Be 18 years of age or older 3) Live in Georgia and/or have received their cancer treatment in Georgia.

If you are eligible, please fill out the survey here: https://redcap.emory.edu/surveys/?s=73wVEWEkgQ. If you know of a cancer survivor that may be eligible, please pass it along. “The more respondents we get, the more representative our assessment will be,” added Kirsch.

The survey will close on Oct. 30, 2014. If you have any questions, or need access to a paper version of the survey, please feel free to contact Georgia CORE at 404.523.8735 or info@georgiacore.org.
